Most modern vehicles are equipped with an Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) system, iand the EVAP Canister Vent Valve is a critical component in that system. The canister vent valve is a normally open valve that checks for leaks in the EVAP system. One side of the vent valve is attached to the charcoal canister. The other side of the valve is connected to the vent hose, which includes a filter at the end.
When the enabling conditions for a leak test are met, the EVAP Canister Vent Valve is closed and sealed, and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) tests the EVAP system for leaks. If the test fails, it indicates that leaks are present in the EVAP system, which may lead to negative impacts to the vehicle's performance and the environment. If the EVAP Canister Vent Valve becomes stuck closed, it prevents excess pressure from being vented properly and released from the fuel tank. This results in excessive accumulation of pressure that will only escape when you open the fuel tank cap, and may also lead to difficulty when refueling.
When the Canister Vent Valve is stuck open, excess fuel vapors escape into the environment. This causes you to smell fuel vapors while in or near the vehicle.
