The Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) system is an indispensable component in modern vehicles, serving as a crucial safeguard against environmental pollution. Its primary function is to prevent fuel vapors from escaping the fuel tank, thereby curbing air contamination.
This system efficiently captures vapors, directing them into a charcoal canister for temporary storage before being channeled to the combustion chamber. This process depends on the Purge Control Valve, a vital component responsible for the controlled transfer of the stored vapors.
In modern vehicles, most Purge Control Valves are powered by electric solenoids, and controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). In its normal state, the Purge Valve is closed. When the PCM sends a signal, the valve opens and releases fuel vapor stored in the charcoal canister. This vapor mixes with the air in the intake manifold and is burned in the combustion chamber, ensuring vehicle operation is clean and efficient.
Electrical Issues:
- Wiring may be damaged or corrosion may be present on connectors.
- Poor quality wiring or incorrect installation.
Mechanical Issues:
- Normal wear over time.
- Exposure to excessively high or extreme temperatures.
- Dirt, debris, and contamination can affect movement of the solenoid.
The PCM and several sensors monitor EVAP Purge Control Valve operation and purge flow. If the purge volume differs from acceptable values, the MIL will illuminate.
A malfunctioning EVAP Purge Control Valve can cause engine stalling or rough idle. If the valve is stuck open, excessive fuel vapor may flood the engine and cause stalling or running rough, especially after filling the fuel tank.
A malfunctioning EVAP Purge Control Valve can allow fuel vapors to escape from the EVAP system. In this case, you will likely smell gasoline around the vehicle, especially after parking.
When the EVAP Purge Control Valve does not operate normally, it affects the air-fuel ratio. Your vehicle should still start, but it may struggle to do so.
If the EVAP Purge Control Valve is not functioning properly, your vehicle’s engine can misfire. Misfires can be caused by many factors, so you should use a Scan Tool to identify the problem clearly.
